Your First 30 Days of AI Fluency
49% of workers have never used AI. If that's you, this is a tactical guide to change that in 30 days. Not to become an expert. To become capable enough to see what's actually possible.
Week 1: Experiment (Days 1–7)
Days 1–3: Use free tools. Sign up for ChatGPT (free tier), Claude, or Gemini. Spend 15 minutes with each. Ask them:
- Summarize an article you've read
- Explain something you've never understood
- Brainstorm 5 ideas for a problem you have
- Write a funny email
Get a feel for what these things actually do. Notice where they surprise you. Notice where they fail.
Days 4–7: Solve one real problem. Pick something from work or life: organizing project notes, drafting an email, learning a concept, brainstorming. Use AI to help. The goal isn't perfection. It's to move from "This seems like magic" to "Oh, I see what it does and doesn't do."
Week 2: Understand (Days 8–14)
Now that you've played with it, learn how it works. Spend 30 minutes reading/watching on:
- How LLMs work (conceptually—you don't need math)
- Three industry examples where AI is actually moving business outcomes
- What "training" and "hallucination" mean
This moves you from "looks like magic" to "I see the mechanism." That matters because you'll make better decisions about what to use it for.
Week 3: Apply (Days 15–21)
Run 3–5 experiments on real tasks:
- Use AI to write a first draft, then edit
- Use AI to explore an idea, then build on it
- Use AI to catch mistakes in something you've written
- Use AI to help you learn a skill or concept
After each experiment, write down what worked and what didn't. This is your data on how to actually use these tools.
Week 4: Sustain (Days 22–30)
Pick one tool you'll keep using (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.). Create 2–3 prompts you'll actually use. Plan your next 90 days. What's one skill or task you'll work on with AI? Make it specific.
By day 30, you've moved from "I've never used this" to "I have a workflow and I'm improving."
What You've Actually Accomplished
You're no longer in the 49%. You've got hands-on experience. You understand the basics of how it works. You've built a tiny bit of fluency and identified where it actually helps you. That's a real foundation.
"Fluency isn't mastery. It's being able to use something naturally enough that you can focus on the result, not the tool."
